Provincial Annual Convocation
Provincial Grand Scribe Ezra’s Report
for the Year 2016-2017
ME Grand Superintendent,
I am pleased to submit to you my report on the activities within your Province for the past year.
Sadly, I have to report that during the last year thirty-seven of our members have passed to the Grand Chapter above. Well known to many will be E Comps Graham Herbert, Norman Trimbee, Ronald Gillett-Toon, David Stone, James McKean and Stewart Mackay. The full list is shown at the back of the booklet.
During the past year your Province has been represented by members of the Executive at the Annual General Convocations of the Metropolitan Grand Chapter of London and twelve other Provinces. In return we are pleased to receive and welcome visitors from Provinces with whom we have reciprocal arrangements, so continuing to cement Inter-Provincial relationships.
In the year ending 31 May 2017 there were 32 Exaltees. The total number of members at 1 June 2016 was 1,800 and at 31 May 2017 was 1,803. During the year the number of memberships fell by 117 to 2,197. The total number of Chapters at 31 May 2017 was 87.
On 27 March 2017 the Middlesex First Principals Chapter No 3420 was again honoured to host the annual Gordon Bourne Lecture, which was delivered by E Comp Ron Selby and entitled The Principal Sojourner – An Insight and Background.
The Assistants to the Provincial Grand Principals, each with his own team of Visiting Officers, have ensured that every Chapter in the Province has been visited during the last twelve months. On occasions of more than usual importance, such as Anniversaries or Banner Dedications, visits have been made by the Deputy Grand Superintendent, Second or Third Provincial Grand Principal. The purpose of such visits is to continue to encourage, assist and support the Companions of the Province and to maintain an happy and unified Province.
At the time of preparing this report for printing we were looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of Pro Juventute Chapter No 6999 on 16 June. Since last year’s Annual Convocation, Prince Michael of Kent Chapter No. 9120 marked its 25th Anniversary with a splendid celebratory convocation held in Temple No 10 at Freemasons’ Hall on 27 June 2016. The convocation was honoured by the presence of Excellent Companion His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent, GCVO, as guest of honour and a demonstration of the Ceremony of the Veils was given by the Prince Michael of Kent Chapter Support and Demonstration team. It was, indeed, a wonderful occasion.
The Province has continued its policy of development and training by holding seminars for Exaltees and Principals in the past year, hosted by the Second and Third Provincial Grand Principals and further similar seminars are planned for the coming year, with a Principals Seminar scheduled for 8 July at Harrow.
The Middlesex Grand Officers & Provincial Grand Officers Club continues to flourish with Andrew Elliott as Secretary and Warren Gell as Treasurer. The Autumn 2016 meeting was the last to be held at the Imperial College, Heston, with which the Club had been associated for some 12 years. The Spring 2017 meeting was held at Brunel University. The Club continues to serve as a vital link through which you are able to disseminate important news and information to the senior members of the Province for onward transmission to other Chapter members.
Congratulations are extended to all those who were honoured by the conferment of Supreme Grand Chapter Rank, especially the following Middlesex Companions who were appointed in 2017.
E Comp Jonathan James Hillman PAGSoj
E Comp John David Billett PGStB
E Comp David John Gosney PGStB
E Comp John Robert Power PGStB
E Comp Colin Hollingsworth PAGDC
E Comp Paul Vincent Lane PAGDC
E Comp William George Scott PAGDC
The Provincial Grand Treasurer, E Comp Howard Walters PPrGReg, the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies, E Comp Nigel Codron PGStB and his Deputies, E Comp Michael Cumper PProvGStwd and the members of Prince Michael of Kent Chapter No 9120 continue to provide essential services to the Province. E Comp Nigel Codron was appointed an AsstProvGM at the annual meeting on 9 May 2017 of Provincial Grand Lodge and therefore stands down at this meeting. The Province is grateful to E Comp Nigel for his dedicated service over the last six years and welcomes his successor as ProvGDC, E Comp Jim Mitchell.
E Comp Peter de Wolfe PGStB continues to arrange the escorts for members of the Executive when visiting Chapters and has done excellent work in collecting and issuing Royal Arch Jewels for Active officers.
I am deeply indebted to all the staff and volunteers in the Provincial Office, without whose unstinting and loyal support the job of the ProvGSE would be impossible.
ME Grand Superintendent, we all look forward to the future, under your leadership, as Royal Arch Masons in the Province of Middlesex.
