At the regular Convocation of Hegeston Chapter, No.5220 on Thursday 14th April it was the pleasant duty of E. Comp Paul Lane PAGDC APGP to present a 50 Year Certificate to Chapter member E. Comp George Keen PPrGSN.
To receive a 60 year Certificate in the Craft is one thing, but to attain a 50 year honour in the Holy Royal Arch also marks a significant moment in a masonic career.
Comp George has had a long career in Freemasonry and this presentation was testimony to his fortitude and fidelity to freemasonry in general and his Chapter in particular.
After joining the Merchant Navy as a Cadet during the Second World War he subsequently received his 2nd Mates Ticket and took part in the Trans-Atlantic convoys.
He was invited to take part in the Victory Parade in 1946 as a representative of the Merchant Marine.
Due to illness in 1949 he left the Merchant Navy and took up work in London where he met a George Hargill, a freemason, who proposed him into the Aries Lodge No 5086 in 1957.
He became Master in 1968 and again in 2000.
Service to London Craft saw him ultimately reach SLGR in 1991 and he was presented with a 60 year Craft Certificate in 2017.
After ten years in the Craft, George turned to Royal Arch Masonry in the Province of Middlesex being exalted in to Hegeston Chapter in 1968.
His service was distinguished and during his time occupied the First Principal’s Chair on several occasions.
Not only that, he was Chapter Almoner for 5 years, ADC for 10 years and Charity Steward; an impressive list of responsibilities.
In 1984 his first Provincial appointment was as PPrGSoj and later in 1995 he was promoted to PPrDepGReg and subsequently PPrGSN.
This is an impressive track record of dedication and involvement in the Holy Royal Arch in Middlesex.
Not only did the Chapter members celebrate the 50 year award, but were able to make a surprise presentation of a cheque for £2000 to E. Comp Paul Lane in aid of the 2020 Festival.
This would allow the Chapter to achieve Steward status.
Comp George Keen is now 91 years old and there is no doubt that his long service and dedication to Hegeston Chapter No 5220 must surely be unequalled and unrivalled.
There is no doubt he is an example to all Royal Arch Masons.
