The dawn of 2020 heralds not only the start of the third decade of the 21st Century, but also the start of a very important year for the Province of Middlesex.
On 22nd January 2020, we will commemorate two important events.
First, the 150th Anniversary of both the consecration of Burdett Lodge, No. 1293 and the inauguration of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Middlesex, both ceremonies having been carried out on Saturday 22nd January 1870 at The Clarence Hotel (now renamed The Park Hotel) in Park Road, Teddington, Middlesex by the then Grand Secretary, V.W. Bro. John Hervey, Past Grand Deacon, for the double purpose of installing Colonel Francis Burdett, Past Grand Warden (later Colonel Sir Francis Burdett, Bt.), as the Primus Master of Burdett Lodge, to enable his subsequent appointment and installation as the Province’s First Provincial Grand Master.
Second, the culmination of almost 5-years fund-raising for the 2020 Festival in support of the work of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys (now part of the Masonic Charitable Foundation). At the meeting of the Provincial Grand Officers’ Club at the end of October 2019, I informed you that we had, at that date, reached a significant total of almost £4.1 million and I urged you to continue your magnificent efforts so that we would achieve a final total of which our Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro HRH Prince Michael of Kent, GCVO, would be justly proud.
The 150th Anniversary of Burdett Lodge No. 1293 will be celebrated at the regular meeting to be held by dispensation at Cole Court, Twickenham on Wednesday 22nd January 2020, at which the Members of the Provincial Executive and I will be present, together with representatives of the eight Lodges that, in February 1869, successfully petitioned the Most Worship the Grand Master, the 2nd Earl of Zetland, for the formation of the Provincial Grand Lodge of Middlesex.
The 150th Anniversary of the inauguration of the Province and the culmination of the 2020 Festival will be celebrated at a dinner to be held at Plaisterers’ Hall in the City of London on Friday 27th March 2020, at which the final total of the 2020 Festival will be announced. Details of this event are available from the Festival Committee.
The Province’s 150th Anniversary will also be celebrated at the Annual Service of Thanksgiving to be held at the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban on Sunday 25th October 2020, at which it is anticipated the Provincial Grand Master will be present.
Finally, I thank you all for your support of the Provincial Grand Master, myself and the Province during the past year and I wish you all, your families and loved ones, every blessing and a very happy and peaceful New Year.
With kindest fraternal regards
