MBE for Past Master of Harrow Temple in Unity Lodge, No. 1310

David MarkThe Province offers it’s heartiest congratulations to David Anthony Mark, a PM of Harrow Temple in Unity Lodge, No. 1310 who was awarded the MBE for services to housing and the community in the New Year Honours.

The Westway Housing Association, of which David is Chairman, issued the following statement:-

We are delighted to announce that the Chairman of Westway Housing Association, David Mark was awarded an MBE for services to Housing and the community in the 2014 New Year Honours list.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyor, Corporate Member Chartered Institute of Housing and has held Directorship of several local authorities.

As a founding member, David was central to the setting up of Westway Housing Association as a black-led, community organisation that could help meet the housing needs and aspirations of local people – particularly those from the black and ethnic minority communities.

David’s ambition to provide good quality housing was shaped by deep involvement in the local community. He brought personal knowledge and experience of deprivation in Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill – from the early days of the slum landlord Rackman, to the riots of the 1980s – and real understanding of the domestic and emotional stresses that local people experienced.

David has now been an active member of Westway HA for more than 26 years, and Chairman since 1999. Under David’s stewardship, the Association has achieved our most notable success and milestone providing affordable housing; establishing a hostel for single homeless people; developing property for rough sleepers; actively supporting school children and the Notting Hill Carnival and creating an educational bursary for residents.

During David’s tenure as Chairman, the Association has also supported the Pepperpot Elderly Day Centre and Nubian Life – two schemes providing much-needed services to the ethnic elderly in West London.

All these achievements are testimony to David’s outstanding leadership abilities.

As well as his work with Westway HA, David has been an active board member for another leading West London housing association, A2 Dominion, Positive Action Training Housing (PATH) and the Federation of Black Housing Organisation (FBHO).

David will be stepping down as Chairman of Westway HA during 2014
