Freemasonry and the Great War:
How Masons and Lodges reacted to the war years
by
W. Bro. Mike Karn, PAGSwdB
When Britain declared war on Germany in 1914, Freemasonry in England faced unprecedented circumstances.
UGLE for the first time had to contend with the impact of a global war.
WW1 was one of the largest and most devastating wars in world history, which lasted four years and four months.
It is believed that some 65 million were mobilised, resulting in 16 million military and civilian deaths, and a further 37 million casualties.
English Masonic Lodges continued to meet during the war years and the lecture is very much an account of the way Freemasonry and many Lodges reacted to the conflict.
Much of the information having been researched from individual Lodge Histories and Minute Books mainly in Middlesex and London.
With PowerPoint presentation
After the talk, there will be a First World War singalong with professional organist Bro. Lee Walton.
This talk will be a White Table event to which wives, partners, and non-Masonic guests are welcome.

Gilbert & Sullivan
Musical Masons
by
W. Bro. Paul Huggins, PSGD, APGM
Everyone has heard of the lovely Gilbert and Sullivan operettas which are so widely performed throughout the English speaking world by amateur operatic companies, schools and grand opera houses, not to mention popular excerpts being constantly broadcast on radio. Of the fourteen operettas they wrote together their most famous works are probably Trial by Jury, The Mikado, H. M. S. Pinafore and The Pirates of Penzance. The witty libretti by W. S. Gilbert and the beautiful tuneful music by Arthur Sullivan have entertained the English speaking world since their creation in late Victorian times.
Both Sullivan and Gilbert were Freemasons, and the lecture will detail their masonic, as well as musical and writing careers, together with a vocal addition. The subject has a particular relevance to our Province as Sullivan was Initiated into the Lodge of Harmony No 255, and subsequently it is understood that he met Gilbert through an introduction from a member of that lodge.
This talk will be a White Table event to which wives, partners, and non-Masonic guests are welcome.

Monday 11th December 2017 at 5.00 p.m.

The Swinging Sixties
A lecture by
W. Bro. Andrew Farleigh SLGR, SLGCR
This lecture explores the heyday of Freemasonry from the Victorian era leading up to the modern day.
Why was Freemasonry so popular in the 1950-60s and what it was like to be a Freemason during that time?
Why has Freemasonry been in a steady decline ever since the late 1960s?
Experiences of real Masons initiated in the 1960s are compared with the experiences of those of today.
The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Mary Quant are all featured in this lecture – and there’s even a two minute promotional Cinema advert for Butlins in the 1960s, which shows just how much things have changed in society since then.
Why was “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” instrumental in the decline in Freemasonry and why was Freemasonry not really compatible with the Sexual Revolution?

Neptune Lodge No. 22 and how Freemasonry was conducted in the 1750’s

(L to R) : George Emsden, LGR; Brian Fisher, PSGD, PAPGM; Phillip Cowen, LGR all of Neptune Lodge No.22
The the Lodge Secretary, W. Bro Ron Selby reports:-
“The Lodge was then Called Off for the main act of the evening.
Well the Summons said “to receive the Inaugural Paper from the Worshipful Master entitled “Neptune Lodge No. 22 and how Freemasonry was conducted in the 1750’s.”
But it was not really a paper, more of a playlet with the Master as the star.
Brian retired from the Lodge, and the Secretary moved aside for Neptune’s Secretary to take his seat and Phillip Cowan of Neptune Lodge occupied the Master’s Chair.
Brian then returned, in a mad rush, dressed as a fine gentleman in 18th Century attire, complete with a tricorn hat.
What was then presented was great fun and a complete change for this Lodge; it was explained that it was a reproduction of a Meeting of Neptune Lodge in the Grand Temple on 22nd August 2007, when there were 650 people there including many from overseas.
As Brian said, addressing the Master’s Chair, “The Illustrious Brother on your right at the time was the Most Worshipful Pro Grand Master, The Marquess of Northampton, if I may ask you sir (addressed to RW. Bro. Roger Croome) to assume that illustrious role”.
At the conclusion, the acting S.W. then proposed a vote of thanks to Brian, saying that he had not seen him looking so good.
The J.W., George Laverick, said that it had been a great treat to see the re-enactment and learn the history of a wonderful Lodge.
The thought going through the Secretary’s mind during all this, was how on earth was he going to reproduce this in the Transactions ?!
Temple of Athene, No. 9541 – W Bro Ron Hart – 60 Years in Freemasonry
1st June, 2016 saw the 89th Regular and 22nd Installation meeting of Temple of Athene Lodge No. 9541, the Masonic Research Lodge of the Province of Middlesex.
After presenting a paper on St Albans Cathedral at the last meeting, W. Bro. George Laverick, PGStB, ProvGO (Herts), was balloted for and became a joining member of the Lodge.
After Twenty-Two years membership, and persistent nagging over the last few years, W.Bro. Michael Le Gray, PSGD, PAPGM, one of its Founders, finally capitulated and was Installed as the 22nd Master.
His Inaugural Paper was entitled “Temple of Athene No. 9541; a Tribute to Who, Why, Where and When” which gave the story behind the Founding and Consecration of the Lodge at Sion Park, Brentford, disclosing some previously unknown facts, and then providing some vivid background of some of the Founders, particularly our Founding Secretary, Ronald J. R. Hart, PPrJGW, SLGR, PPrJGW (Suffolk).
Immediately after the talk, and as a complete surprise, Ron was presented with his 60 Years in Freemasonry Certificate by RW. Bro. Roger Croome QPM, PProProvGM, who eloquently supplemented Michael’s presentation with Ron’s awe-inspiring Masonic history.
Also in attendance were RW. Bro. Philip Bullock, ProvGM (Wiltshire) and Brian Fisher, PSGD, APGM, PProvGTreas, the incoming Junior Warden.

“A Peep at the Pro’s Problems and Pleasures” – Report
Temple of Athene Lodge No. 9541 – meeting on 10th February 2014.
The main item on the agenda for the meeting was a talk by the Pro Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. Roger Croome, QPM.
In the Chair was W.Bro. Dr. Mike Kearsley, ProvGOrat, and this year’s Prestonian Lecturer.
As one would expect, there was a very large turnout which filled the main Temple at Harrow District Masonic Centre.
Not only was the Lodge honoured with the ProProvGM’s presence, but also by two PProProvGMs, R.W. Bros. Gordon Bourne and David Cons.
Is this a “first”; three RW Brethren of the Province at one meeting?
The title of Roger Croome’s talk was; A Peep at the Pro’s Problems and Pleasures; A short waffle through the joys and pitfalls of running a large Province.
The talk was in the form of answering pre-submitted questions from the Secretary, which he did with candour and humour.
Questions such as:
– Is Prince Michael involved with the running of the Province?
– Is the Role of the M.E.G.Supt. exactly the same as the Pro PGM?
– Was there an ‘L of I’ for you as a new Pro?
– How do you deal with complaints about members?
– Etc etc
The answers as given by Roger Croome, along with those to further questions asked after the talk, will appear in the next set of Transactions of the Lodge.
