A Special Installation at Bedfont Lodge

The Worshipful Master and Brerthren of Bedfont Lodge

Thursday 4th November 2021 was a special day in the history of Bedfont Lodge, No. 8381, the Installation of Brother Simon Highsmith.

Every Installation meeting is special for a new WM but this was particularly special as Simon is blind.

Simon was Initiated into Bedfont Lodge on 1st May 2014, Passed on 3rd July 2014 and Raised on 5th March 2015 and has held every office in the Lodge carrying out these respective duties with aplomb.

In fact, as a Deacon, he would take the Candidates around on his own, using his deacon’s wand to tap on the brass rail around the perimeter of the temple at Staines to guide him.

He is also a regular attendee at Lodge of Instruction, only requiring a member of the lodge to collect him from the local station.

He first came to the notice of the Province when W Bro Nigel Codron, then ProvGDC, was asked to provide some guidance on how to manage Simon’s Initiation Ceremony.

With the assistance of W Bro Jim Mitchell, then ProvDepGDC, an adaptation of the ceremony was prepared and used for the Ceremony.

Unfortunately, due to a previous commitment, Nigel was unable to attend the Initiation ceremony but promised to attend his Installation.

Simon attended Provincial Grand Lodge for the first time in May 2015 when he was selected to parade the Lodge Banner into the Grand Temple along with many other Master Masons in front of the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro HRH Prince Michael of Kent, who was presiding that year.

Simon wrote a memorable and moving account of his experience that day, which you can read here:-

Newly Installed Master of Bedfont Lodge at Festive Board

28 Brethren attended the meeting, including the APGM, W Bro Robert Rough, together with a Provincial delegation all of whom witnessed a super Installation by W Bros Robert Betts and Charles Weaver.

The highlight for all of us was when Simon invested his Officers with such confidence and never needed a prompt – a lesson for all of us.

The Risings showed Simon’s sense of humour as when responding to a member’s question as to the location of the Lodge Banner, he answered “it is behind you!”

As Bedfont Lodge has its own resident Piper, Brother Iain Raymond, W Bro Simon was piped out of the Lodge and into the Festive Board.

No doubt an awesome experience for the new Master.

The Festive Board was a very jolly occasion and special to see Simon visibly moved when we all sang the Master’s Song.

It was an honour and privilege to be at this special meeting and we all wish Simon a very good year in the Chair of King Solomon.

A grateful thanks to W Bro Nigel Codron, PSGD, PAPGM for the report and also to W Bro Daniel Graham Provincial Grand Communications Officer for the photography
