A Gothic Tale from Southgate

Brethren of Gothic Lodge, No. 4517, Visitors and the Lodge’s Visiting Officer, W Bro Sam Baqui – Meeting at Southgate Masonic Centre

The word Gothic stirs up a notion of the Frankenstein and Dracula novels and the works of Edgar Alan Poe, which are referred to as part of the gothic genre in literature.

No such horror story to report here and it was with much joy and rejoicing that Gothic Lodge, No. 4517 on Saturday, 12th January 2019 Initiated Mr Lee Wheatley, now Brother Lee, into Freemasonry in Middlesex.

Not bad for an Essex Boy: Lee living in Rainham.

Bro Lee with his Dad and the Worshipful Master

Many of our Lodge stories celebrate the father and son relationships in Freemasonry, but in this case it was not to be and no doubt Lee’s father, Martin, was gladdened by his son’s decision to become a Freemason, yet at the same time saddened that Lee was joining elsewhere.

Bro Martin Wheatley, however, was fully supportive of his son’s decision, and was a guest at the Meeting, together with three colleagues from Lucton Lodge, No. 3353 in Essex, where Lee’s father will be soon Installed as Worshipful Master.

Lee preferred to join Gothic Lodge, as it meets on a Saturday, meaning no clashes with his working life as a Technical Manager on London Underground at Palmers Green.

It also meant Lee could attend Lodges of Instruction at the Southgate Masonic Centre, whereas it would have been completely impractical for him to travel to Essex for this purpose.

Another incentive for the decision was that Lee’s workplace colleagues in Gothic Lodge supported his application and will continue to help him through his Masonic career.

Bro Martin Wheatley presented the First Degree Working Tools to his son, and the Lodge’s Visiting Officer, W Bro Sam Baqui, gave Lee a welcome letter from W. Bro Bob Rough PAGDC APGM, and a copy of the Ancient Charge delivered at the end of the ceremony.

Gothic Lodge’s Worshipful Master, W. Bro Frank Brooker was conducting his last Ceremony before Installing his successor in April, and was delighted to welcome Lee and his supporters to the Meeting.

The Ceremony was considerably enhanced by the music provided by W Bro Paul Huggins PSGD APGM, who acts as Organist to the Lodge.
